Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

It has been a VERY long time since I updated this blog.  Like my friend Keith says, blogs give you the idea that people care to hear about the minutia of your life.  Well, I have things to say and I want to share them with my family.

This is what's going on right now.  If you were not aware, my sister in law Joanna is pregnant with her first baby, a girl.  She is 29 weeks. On Monday, Joanna had a doctor's appointment with her high risk OB up near Boston.  Something didn't look good during the appointment and the news that was relayed to me was, "Joanna's baby is coming today." I was absolutely terrified.  It is TOO early.  I was at work.  Justin was on his way home from Atlantic City.  My mother in law, Jennee needed to get to the hospital in Providence where Joanna was on her way to so they could deliver and they had no one to watch my little in laws. I left work and drove straight to my mother in law's so I could babysit.

Throughout the day we received more news.  Joanna had two ultra sounds.  One was a fancy one that showed how big baby is and that she is viable.  Little Maggie is only 1 lb 12 oz.  She is going to need a lot of prayers.  They decided to keep Joanna on monitors and give her steroid shots to help Maggie's lungs grow.  Jo got the first shot around 5:30  pm Monday and the second today at the same time. Delivery is scheduled via c-section for Wednesday, June 27 around 5:30 p.m.  Justin and I will be there for support because she will need all of it that she can get.  I cannot imagine seeing your baby for the first time and having her be so teeny tiny.  I know that doctors can do amazing things and that the technology is so advanced now.  I am hoping and praying for all of us that Maggie is able to grow big and strong while she is on the feeding tubes and breathing machines.  We need a lot of positive prayers and thoughts.

Nothing about this is easy but I know a lot of women who had their babies premature and now have healthy little boys and girls.  I pray that this is the same result for my niece.

Love and miss you all..

The art of becoming a homeowner

It has been a week and one day since we closed on our house. Everything went very smoothly ...well almost everything. I took January 14th off from work. Justin went to work slightly early so he could leave at quarter to 10 and meet me at the house to do our walk through. I ended up leaving just a tad bit late and found that I need gas so that held me up. Then I wanted to get coffee because for whatever reason I didn't make it at home. I felt my car riding slightly strange. Eventually I make it to the house and meet Justin and Jeff, our agent. It was so fun to be there and know that in mere hours this house would be OURS.

Jeff was very patient with us as we checked everything out. Our friend Steve eventually met us at the house because we had plans for him to help us with shopping later in the day and cleaning up once we got the keys. In not so typical fashion, Jeff handed us the set of keys he had from the lock box before the closing. We thought that was the only set. We were at the house for over an hour which surprised me. Then it was time to head to Barrington for the closing!! Jeff left separate from us and it was planned that Justin and Steve would ride in Justin's car while I took mine to the apartment and dropped it off. I left before everyone else and noticed immediately something was wrong. I thought perhaps it was some snow on my tires.

I pulled off to the side of the road at this closed gas station by the house and I found that I had a flat tire. Oh no! I called Justin immediately. I saw Jeff go by me on the road and when I told him later he said he didn't even see me. Justin and Steve came to rescue me. We ended up leaving my car in front of this house/masonry business on a side road. A guy driving a plow gave us his card and said he could fix it for us if we needed. There was no time to get it fixed as we needed to get back to Barrington.

I hopped in the car with the guys and we set off. We arrived at the closing at the same time as the seller. I won't go into the boring details of the closing but it was a very neat experience. I was so nervous the entire time and STARVING! I didn't eat before we got there which was so stupid. My blood sugar was dropping at a rapid rate and finally I accepted a hot chocolate from Jeff so I could feel a little better. Our closing Attorney, Bruce looked like Christopher Reeves a little bit. The seller and his agent left before we did. The seller handed us a bigger set of keys with a key chain that said "Mom's keys". I have a hard time describing how it felt. As he left, the seller said "Have fun with the house.." I don't know that I necessarily feel bad..but it's a strange experience to now own something that a person lived in for 40 years.

It was not too much longer after they left that Justin and I were done signing papers. I didnt think that was too bad. I thought it would be much more. To be honest, it all went by so fast! And then...the final paper was signed and it was done! I let out a big sigh of relief and Jeff laughed at me.

We broke out a bottle of Apple Cider and had a toast with Steve, who had come back at that point. We took a few pictures of us holding the deed. Then it was all over and we left!

I will really miss Jeff. He was such a big help in this process. Whenever we're ready to sell this house we will definitely go back to him to be our agent again.

So this last week has been filled with making changes at the house. Pics on FB ! I can't wait to share more and I am so ready for it to be done and for us to be living there!

Justin and I have been keeping rather quiet about the potential purchase of our first house. We went through this in the fall and the house turned out to be something we could not feel comfortable buying. I think this time around we felt like it was better to keep quiet.

We are 8 days (and some change) away from closing on this other house we've found. Even though we got our approval letter from the bank I still feel queasy about telling the masses that we're buying a house. I hope no one takes offense if I didn't call or send a direct message informing them about our prospect. It's been a very stressful and whirlwind month. It's really hard to believe that it was only a month ago that we saw this house for the first time.

From the get-go I have been fearful that we really CAN'T afford a mortgage. I am fearful that we won't be able to handle the things that just come up when you are home owner. I am placing bets on what the first thing to break will be. (My bets fall on the fridge!) I am worried that we will find ourselves unhappy with the size of our bedroom and frustrated at our 1950's kitchen. WORRY WORRY WORRY!!!

I have to take a deep breath and remember that this is our first house. It is our starter home. We do not plan to be here for ages. We couldn't possibly raise our entire family in this house so I know that we'll be able to upgrade in the future.

I feel like the "cat is out of the bag" and that anyone paying attention to my facebook would be able to figure out whats going on...I still don't want to say anything OFFICIAL until it's OFFICIAL. I hope everyone understands.

Buyers have no imagination. This is the main message I receive when I watch home deocration shows geared toward helping people sell their houses. I admit, watching HGTV is a hobby of mine. One of my favorites is House Hunters (International too). I find it amusing how particular people can be about these houses that I could only dream of affording and living in.

"This closet is far too small" -Even though the closet is the size of a bedroom
"This house has too many stairs!" -Well, you're in Philadelphia in a row house...those are built up not out!
"Ugh these counter tops are not granite and the appliances are not stainless steal! who has EVER heard of such a thing?" -Mmmkay. I understand preferring a certain style but don't let it be a deal breaker on an otherwise lovely home.
"I want to be close to the highway....but what's that? I can HEAR THE HIGHWAY while in my yard. Simply unacceptable!"-DUH?

And so on and so forth...

However, in my journey through my own house hunt I have found it's very true that buyers do not have an imagination. My husband will tell you differently but I have a hard time "looking beyond". I can look beyond paint color but we've seen multiple houses with dirty carpet and disgusting kitchens. I really have a hard time imagining how something can look if it's covered in dirt and dust.

I also find it amusing that in the house we have chosen as "the one" we seem to have gone against nearly everything we wanted in the first place. I am really looking forward to ripping up carpet and painting walls and turning our house into something that we enjoy!

I hope you will all come visit :)

Ouch ouch ouch!!! Hot laptop on sunburnt legs=NO FUN!

I AM BACK from Puerto Rico. What a grand time it was. This post would be more interesting with photos but I don't have any on my laptop just yet. We only got home sixteen hours ago!

So if I wasn't clear, Justin and I went to the El Conquistador resort in Fajardo, PR. Its about an hour from San Juan. This was my first time in PR but Justin has been before with Draw the Line. I left work at 2 on Monday and came home to finish up getting ready for the airport. We were in the airport in plenty of time so we went to find food. While waiting in line for my meal I heard a very Caucasian looking man say to his daughter, "Do you have Gringo money?" WHAT???? Our plane boarded and took off just fine and off we went to Houston. We got there just before 10pm which was sad for Justin because his favorite place to get a veggie burger (Rubys) was closed. We had a two hour lay over so we wandered around the airport and found one place still open. I got a bagel, Justin got a danish. I was really tired by that point and I wanted to sleep through the second flight but it just wasn't happening for me.

I always seem to have this issue on overnight flights with Justin. When I am at the window, I fall asleep and then wake up to find I REALLY have to pee. But I am stuck because its me, Justin and a stranger lady and I hate waking up strangers. So I had to hold it for a while. I think I finally gave up on sleeping around 4 am. It was still dark by the time we landed in San Juan. On the airplane I had on a sweatshirt and when we stepped off into the jetway it was HOT. It was like stepping into a sauna. 80 degrees at 5 am!!!!!!

Our bags were pretty much waiting for us when we got down to the carousel so we were able to find our shuttle to the resort very quickly. I dozed on the shuttle because there wasn't much of note to see on the drive. PR is very run down =/ However once we pulled past the resort gates it was like a whole different world. Manicured lawns and green trees and grass. It was SO beautiful. We were taken to the main lobby where we checked in quickly, courtesy of Mike Russell who ran down to the front desk right before we got there. We were taken to our room and got the first look at our view.

(Ill steal some of the pictures Justin posted from his phone while we were there)
Here is the view from our hotel room:

There were three pools at the main building and we had easy access to all three. Plus 3 jacuzzi's, one with a really great view of the Caribbean. Oh and in the above picture you can see the private island, Palomino off in the distance

After enjoying the view for a moment we decided to take a nap. Woke up about two hours later and hit the resort to explore. We found a breakfast place where it was very expensive to eat(a running theme of our trip) but worth it because we were starving. Bride and Groom saw us eating and came in to say hi for a moment! After going around some of the shops and riding the Finicular down to the marina we decided it was time to hit the pool. Thats pretty much what we did the rest of the day. Pool, relax poolside, go into the air conditioning for a while, relax pool side...eventually Mike came to our room with a "wedding survival kit" and ended up taking us to see their digs. We went past their building and saw the infinity pool and had lunch with him. I had a REAllY good burger and some Yuca fries and an amazing frozen mango mojito. OM!! Mike charged it to his master account. Bwah it was awesome.

After lunch we parted ways with Mike so he could do the rehearsal. We could *almost* see the garden where the wedding was from our room but trees blocked it. We ended up going back into the pool for a while. I can't really remember what we did after that. I think we might have done some shopping...I think we got showered and looking nice before hitting up the end of the rehearsal dinner lol. That was nice. Afterward, the bridal party and some other friends decided to go swimming again so Justin and I joined everyone for some more pool time. Getting rather hungry, Mike invited us all back to his and Monica's room to eat all the snacks they had stored in there. It ended up just being Justin and I plus Monica's bridesmaid Kelly to snack, chat and watch Seinfeld. We were only there for an hour before calling it a night.

Wednesday morning found us breakfasting at the same place as Tuesday. Our goal for Wed was to check out the private island. It was a bit annoying at first because the boat took forever to get there but it was worth it. The water was like bath water!! The sand was rocky though. A nice sitting beach but not so much a good swimming beach. Shallow. However, we spent some time laying in beach chairs IN the water letting the water lap up over us. Then we got out and decided to go in search of a beverage.

We found this great strawberry fruity drink which we enjoyed under some tiki hut thingys. Got burnt to a crisp, went back in the water a bit then headed back to main land to hit up the pool one last time. We had a late lunch IN the pool at the poolside cafe which was AWESOME Except for when stupid kids were jumping in right by us and splashing our drinks.

After lunch we went back to our room and got ready for the wedding.

My fabulous hair only lasted me until we walked to the garden because the wind picked up. Boo.

The wedding was absolutely gorgeous. Not much to say about it other than that !!! We saw a rainbow on the walk to the terrace where the reception would be held. It was so nice. The food was amazing! The people were nice..the Puerto Ricans were dancing! It was the coolest!

It was such sadness to have to leave. I won't go into the lovely travel we had yesterday. Lets just end this on a good note and sometime this weekend maybe I will have more photos to share!!

Hello family. Justin left a little while ago to head out to Ohio for a couple gigs so I am left with some time to write a real update.

Bullet points:
-Found a new place to live. If you didn't know, our current home is way too small. It has no storage space. We knew this when we agreed to take it but somehow we thought we had a steal. Then we moved our stuff in and since then it's been chaos. Mess and chaos. I haven't really ever felt comfortable in this house. I feel like our stuff is always out in the open. PLUS we had/have an ant issue. As well as a brief mice issue a few months back. Both of these things made us super anxious to find a new place to live but we thought we were stuck in our lease until December. We thought wrong. We discussed with the landlord (rather, Justin discussed.) and he said the lease was really just there in case we up and decided to disappear one day. So at that time we began to look more aggressively. Knowing we had more time and could make an informed decision we looked at a lot of places. Some of them were nicer than others but we always found a problem, mostly that we couldn't figure out the moving IN process. The living there would be okay but moving in, not so much.

Finally we happened upon a second floor, two bedroom apartment with laundry hookups IN the apartment (Horray, no trecking down three flights of stairs) It has TWO entrances including an open stairway in the back to a private deck. The bedrooms were moderately sized. But with the HUGE living room we weren't too worried about bedroom size. The most important part is that there is an extra room for ALL of Justin's musical equipment. So now we can have a REAL living room with an entertainment area and if it works out, maybe a space of my own at the back of the room.

Its not the prettiest of places, they don't allow pets :( (we might be able to get around that after they have seen how we are as tenants) and its a stall only shower. But its certainly workable. And its somewhere that I can see me being able to get creative with. Oh and it has off street parking which is a Godsend.

So we're moving in a week. I will update with my new address when I figure out what it is exactly.

-The day after move in, our two friends are getting married. Steve and Mari. Steve used to be in Draw the Line but isn't anymore. Details need not be posted all over the internet. It just wasn't his decision. But he's happy. Anyway, Mari lives in PA right now so recently we took a trip down to PA and spent a day touring Philly with the two of them. It was a lot of fun. Anyway, their wedding is Quohasset, Mass. Right on the water. It's going to be beautiful! Plus two of our friends from MI are flying out for the wedding so we get to spend time with them.

It's going to be a busy week. After we move in and attend tis wedding, we have to get as situated as possible so we can pack for our vacation. October 4 we fly to Los Angeles. We're staying with Justin's grandma Wanda. Sunday we think will be touristy stuff around her area...which HOPEFULLY My best friend in the whole world will be joining for as she lives in CA now. Monday and Tuesday we're planning for Disneyland with one of those nights devoted to visiting Casey at her home. Wednesday we're going with Justin's grandma to Hollywood!!!! Thursday is Universal and Friday we fly to Hawaii where we will probably spend the next three days on the beach. Then Monday we fly home. Well..we start our flight home.

We leave Hawaii Monday morning. We get to Los Angeles at 9:30 something at night. At 11:55 pm we have to board a plane to Atlanta. Then we fly to PVD from there. If we get home without any delays it will be a miracle. A serious miracle. Please pray for me.

And thats all the excitement I will be having for a while. I want to come home for Christmas but I don't have a plane ticket yet and I dunno how I will be able to afford it since I can barely afford to pay my bills. Justin is coming home with me though.

On the work front, I've been told that when the people in suits decide to address our staffing issue, I will be promoted to secretary and get a hefty raise. But I dont expect that to happen soon so I am not sure what to do. I have to get extra money somehow. I was approved for SOME overtime but its only going to amount to like 50 bucks if I just work 2 hours...so I don't know.

Ah well I should go now. I have been going into work half an hour earlier this week so I can leave at 4:30 when the rst of the non-billing staff leaves. I like leaving early but getting up earlier kinda stinks! BED TIME

Hi hi.

Couple items of interest:

I started a Project 365 today. This is a project a lot of people do. You take one photo per day and share it. Most people do it of themselves. Others do it of objects and things in their lives. I dont know which I am doing. However, my first photo and all the ones to follow can be found at this link

http://shuttercal.com/calendar/iamrenaldo/

Today is the one year anniversary of me moving away from Illinois. Crazy. Maybe I will write about more later but I am on a time crunch. Things are fine, moving into a new place just as soon as we can make a decision. Will be sure to keep everyone updated.

Love ya!
